Whisperings of the Taxus trees
༠ Sumi Landscapes ༡
Transformative Taxus landscape from Suminagashi art to short film.
Blending the ancient Japanese technique of Suminagashi with the almost immortal
longevity of the Yew tree, both creating a hybrid form of life through structuring itself into vivid patterns and shapes.
The “Sumi Landscapes” textiles were inspired and created by the dazzling almost
architectural like forms of the Yew tree. The used textile is made of a shimmering
blended weaving of an Emerald green and Yellow Jasper colour, honouring the
sacred stones related to the Yew tree.
The art piece “Suminagashi Landscape I” taps even deeper into these ancient
energies with the use of copper, a soft metal holding the power to store memory and energy. A total of 25 strings of golden and copper thread were used each with a longitude of 25 cm. Each string is interwoven and connected to the group of 25 Yew trees in Elizabeth Park, Brussels (Belgium).
This piece can be displayed and used as a Yantra – a sacred geometrical diagram
used in ancient spiritual practices to invoke divine energies of deities, planets, or
cosmic forces. When used with care, best intentions and chanting a Mantra into it
daily, it becomes a Universal magnet that may lead to profound spiritual insights,
personal transformation and a deeper connection to the divine and the cosmos.
In addition a short film is made out of the “Sumi Landscapes” textiles to tune into the ever changing visual characteristics of the Yew tree. As it ages for hundreds of years – sometimes even thousands – physical damage appears to see, such as decay holes, bark loss, dead wood in the canopy, fungal fruiting bodies, epiphytic plants.
